L’arte della fuga (nell’originale in tedesco, Die Kunst der Fuge) BWV 1080 è una raccolta di composizioni di Johann Sebastian Bach, senza indicazioni sulla strumentazione, formata da diciannove fughe (ma il loro numero varia a seconda del criterio di classificazione che i diversi editori adottarono per dividerle o accorparle) a tre e quattro voci, quattro canoni a due voci e un corale a quattro voci.

Iniziata intorno al 1740, o forse anche prima, ma portata avanti con assiduità solo a partire dal 1747, L’arte della fuga restò incompiuta a causa della morte di Johann Sebastian Bach, avvenuta nel 1750. Nonostante fosse incompleta, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, figlio di Johann Sebastian, la fece stampare nel 1751. A questa pubblicazione ne seguì una seconda, sempre in versione incompleta, nel 1752. In entrambi i casi, però, l’opera non destò l’interesse del pubblico, ormai orientato verso diverse mode musicali, e vendette solo poche copie.

La raccolta, che costituisce un vero e proprio saggio di arte del contrappunto, esplora sistematicamente tutte le possibilità offerte da un semplice tema in re minore elaborato secondo diverse tecniche compositive, come, ad esempio, la variazione e il rovesciamento speculare degli intervalli. Insieme con l’Offerta musicale, L’arte della fuga è riconosciuta come una delle opere più complesse e articolate mai scritte e viene universalmente considerata uno dei vertici più alti mai raggiunti dalla polifonia contrappuntistica nell’intera storia della musica.
