Brasilia – The Bishops of the Brazilian Amazon released a video with an appeal to world leaders participating in the 26th United Nations Conference on Climate Change asking to hear “the cry of Mother Earth and the poor who suffer for the effects of climate change”. In the video message, according to the note sent to Fides, the Bishops say they are attentive to the discussions of COP 26 and ask, in harmony with Pope Francis, for urgent and courageous commitments to combat climate change and protect the Amazonian biome.
The President of Repam-Brazil, Monsignor Erwin Kräuler, Bishop Emeritus of Xingu, asks the participants of COP26 to listen to “the cry of the peoples, waters and forests of the Amazon”. He also calls on the international authorities to put pressure on the Brazilian government to engage effectively in the defense of people native to the forests and waters of the Amazon. The video shows some Bishops from different countries carrying out their mission in the Amazon, launching an appeal in their language to the international community, asking for “ecological sustainability paths, solutions to reduce the effect of greenhouse gases and intergovernmental cooperation agreements aimed at protecting communities and ecosystems”.
