SOS Children's Village for children with special needs in Jorpati, Nepal

Time gave us a new hero in the sports arena. This new sports star shone during the Paralympic Games, which took place in Kathmandu at the National Stadium from 28th to 30th June 2009. Our junior star Ajaya B.K. grabbed two gold medals in 100 and 200 metres sprint. Siddhartha and Ramesh gained silver medals in the 100 metres and javelin respectively. Likewise Karuna and Bishownath were awarded bronze, also in the 100 metres race and javelin. 

All children completed their academic year 2008/2009 with good results and have started the 2009/2010 year. Recently the result of the School Leaving Certificate examination results came out. This year Sushil Gautam took the final examination and he passed, securing 79.55%, just 0.45% short for a distinction. He is planning to join one of our SOS Schools to study management, with the aim of becoming a Chartered Accountant. 

Youths in both SOS Youth Homes are doing equally well. Jayanti graduated from university and has started to work at an NGO as a volunteer social worker. She is supporting the media team in awareness campaigns in the field of disability. 

Similarly, two older boys, Santosh and Suraj, completed two years’ vocational training and returned to Kathmandu. Santosh is looking for a job and Suraj has started further training. Prajwal is at university taking social work as a major subject.

On 30th January 2009, all the children, youths and staff went for a picnic to "Ichangu Narayan" which is located in the north-western part of the Kathmandu valley. The place was very beautiful with Hindu temples. Another attraction of the picnic was "Bingo".

Holi is the great festival for Nepalese people. Children never want to miss the opportunity to play with colours and water-filled balloons. It was celebrated on 10th March. It was very interesting to see everyone wet with water and coloured faces!

Mother's Day is one of the most special days for our SOS families.  Celebrating the grandeur of ‘the Mother’ on 25th April, all youths from the SOS Youth Home, and those children who are now independent adults, came to the village to see their SOS mothers and take blessings from them. All the mothers of different families whole-heartedly welcomed all their sons & daughters.
