- Anklam received city rights from the Dukes of Pommern in the early 13th century and was part of the Hanseatic League. The present arms are used since 1808, but are based on older seals. The griffin of Pommern on a wall symbolises the founding of the city. The 'arrow' has an unknown origin, but may be taken from the arms of Stralsund, and has been used since the 14th century. [1]
