Headed ICMP In the headed ICMP filters for two fields can be defined: the field of type ICMP, that indicates the type of package ICMP (like request of echo or answer of echo), and the field of code ICMP, that indicates one of the several possible functions within a certain type. If only there is a function within a type, the code field is formed like 0.
ICMP for IP version 6 operation The ICMP implementation, in version 6 of IP(IPv6, to see IPv6P) will require a new version of ICMP. The definitions of both are not complete still. Some important characteristics are already known: ICMP for IPv6 will use a new number of protocol to distinguish it of ICMPv4. The format of head ICMP will remain equal. The lengths of the fields of the messages will change to adjust to the IPv6 messages, that will be of greater length. The values "Type" and "Code" will change. Some values little used will be eliminated. The size of messages ICMP will increase with the purpose of operating the maximum size increased of the packages that IPv6 can trasmitir without fragmenting. The variant "Fragmentation Required" of message ICMP "unreachable Destination" will be replaced by the message "Packet Too Big" that will include the MTU("Maximum Transmission Unit") of exit in which the problem has been located. IGMP (to see IGMP("Internet Group Management Protocol")) will be fused with ICMP.
