Child Sponsorship Background from San Pedro Sula, Honduras

Child from San Pedro Sula, HondurasSOS Children's Village San Pedro Sula

In 1974, northern Honduras was devastated by hurricane "Fifi" which caused a national emergency. As many children had lost their parents in this disaster, an SOS Children's Village was quickly established on the outskirts of San Pedro Sula, the biggest town in northwestern Honduras. Later, in 1991, a new SOS Children's Village was set up near the village of El Carmen, about 15 km east of San Pedro Sula. The building site has many trees and is surrounded by little hills. The children moved into this new facility in August 1991.

SOS Children's Village San Pedro Sula consists of 15 family houses, the village director's house, staff accommodation, rooms for tuition classes and medical treatment, a laundry, a gymnasium as well as an administration and service area. The SOS Children's Village offers a new home for up to 126 orphaned or abandoned children. The soccer field of the SOS Children's Village is a meeting point of all children from the surroundings.

Other SOS Projects in San Pedro Sula

At a certain age, young people from the SOS Children's Village move to rented apartments in the town of San Pedro Sula. At this so-called SOS Youth Home, they gradually prepare for independent living under the care of youth supervisors. On the site of the SOS Children's Village, there is an SOS Social Centre including a day-care centre. This social centre also organises childminding programmes together with mothers and families of the local community.
