KLD TUNAS SAMUDERA was commissioned in the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) on 16 Sep 1989 in Lumut Perak Malaysia, where the Naval Base for Malaysian Navy situated. It is Brigantine type with 3 square sails fitted i.e Fore course, top sail and top gallant. It is also fore and aft rig with 10 sails may be set at any one time in light wind.
Construction began on the ship in 1988 in Lowestoft, England and on the official handover ceremony took place on 16 September 1989 in the presence of The Royal Highness Her Queen Elizabeth Lumut Perak Malaysia.
In the acceptance, the ship was pledged by the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato' Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, to serve Malaysian youth in the interest of maritime life. For a land girt by sea, the ship was a reminder of the maritime heritage shared by all Malaysian.
The Government decided that the Royal Malaysian Navy would operate and maintain the ship, and that the KLD TUNAS SAMUDERA Youth Scheme would be set up to manage the associated sail training program.
The Scheme was established in early 1990 with a Board appointed by and responsible to the Minister for Defence. The Scheme's management and administration is undertaken by civilian staff, and is based in Kuala Lumpur.
As the Malaysian sail training flagship, KLD TUNAS SAMUDERA participated in SAIL INDONESIA tall ship races in 1995 from Benoa - Bali - Jakarta in the occasions of 50th year independence of Indonesia.
