David Kaplan

David Benjamin Kaplan é um filósofo norte-americano, nascido em Los Angeles em 1933. Sua carreira concentra-se sobretudo na Universidade da Califórnia, onde se graduou em Filosofia em 1956 e em Matemática em 1957. Sua dissertação (PhD obtido em 1964), foi orientada por Rudolf Carnap.
Kaplan é reconhecido por sua obra sobre a semântica dos demonstrativos e outras expressões indexicais -- sobretudo em Demonstratives - An Essay on the Semantics, Logic, Metaphysics, and Epistemology of Demonstratives and others Indexicals, de 1977 (publicado em Almog, J., Perry, J. e Wettstein, H. (eds.) Themes from Kaplan, New York, Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1989). Com esses trabalhos tornou-se também um dos expoentes da assim chamada teoria da referência direta.
Kaplan também é reconhecido como um arguto intérprete das teorias lógico-semânticas de Gottlob Frege e Bertrand Russell , p.ex., em "What's Russell's Theory of Descriptions?" (1966), em que oferece uma influente interpretação da teoria russelliana das descrições definidas, e em "How to Russell a Frege-Church" (1979), em que compara a semântica de Frege e a semântica de Russell. Sua obra pode ser lida como uma tentativa de conciliar alguns elementos de ambas teorias.
